Monday’s MST: How Did We Do It?

God has been tugging on my heart lately in many areas of my life and has been blessing me with answers and just revealing himself so clearly to me!  With that, I thought I should give you the real reason we were able to pay everything off in 33 months!  If I keep giving you money saving tips and don’t give you this one, I’m not glorifying the Lord in the success that he brought me, which is wrong on so many levels!  So here’s our secret formula:

God’s Blessings + Our Hard Work = Success

When people ask us how we did it, the first thing that comes to my mind is “Budget!”  You have to have a budget.  And then when I really started thinking about it, I realized it was God’s blessings that we were able to pay it all off.  We came into our marriage huge steps ahead of most couples, mainly because of having NO college loans or credit card debt.  I was scholarshiped in college for soccer, but if God had not blessed me with that talent, who knows where I would be today.  Ryan was scholarshiped in college for baseball and academics, and also had wonderful parents who funded the rest.  He was blessed with those talents and wonderful parents.  If he had not been, who knows if he would be in the same situation as well.  In addition to having no college debts, we were also both blessed to have parents (and the brain) to teach us that credit card usage is dangerous, especially for an 18 year old.  Therefore, we had no credit card debts.  We’ve been married five years now and when I look back at our marriage, I see that we’ve been blessed with our health, no crazy house damage, no serious car problems, and a healthy baby.  Those things can turn someone’s finances upside down.

Now with saying all that, the second part of the equation is hard work!  God’s blessings have made our hard work much easier than maybe someone else’s.  Everyone’s “hard work” to get where they need to be is different - some are born into millions of dollars, some are famous, some come from nothing, some come from blue collar families, so everyone’s journey to financial freedom will be different.  That’s just life.  Ryan and I decided to work hard and reach our goal.  Thank the Lord we did because we are definitely enjoying our rewards from it.  Plus we are able to give to others and it taught us a lot about true needs in life.

I also believe our tithing has blessed us.  It’s hard, but it’s not our money in the first place.  We’re simply bringing back 10% of what the Lord gave us.  That’s a pretty good deal if you ask me.  We get to keep 90% of it!  The Lord rewards those who give.

I’m not saying all this to brag, but I wanted to share what is the REAL reason behind our financial success.

If you are struggling with finances, ask yourself two questions:
1. Are you tithing?
2. Are you asking and relying on the Lord for help?

I’m not going to pretend and say it’s that easy, but I promise you the Lord has your best interest in mind!  If you seek him, he will find you!   If you don’t believe me, try it YOUR way for a while and see if you are better off.

I’ll finish with this quote from Dave Ramsey and how it relates to your walk with Christ.
Dave advises getting a junk car until you can afford to buy the one you want.  He says, “Will your broke relatives and friends make fun of you junk car while you do this?  Sure they will, but that is a very good sign you are on the right track.”
Our walk with Christ is similar.  Will your non-Christian friends make fun of you here on Earth while you praise Him?  Sure they will, but that is a very good sign you are on the right path!!!!
