Our goal this Summer was to work on our yard. Add some things to make it very kid friendly and where we were able to go out there during the summer. Our yard faces the West, so from noon to 7pm, it’s unbearable back there. Not anymore.
Our patio table broke a couple of years ago, so for the longest time, we’ve just had chairs out there and bought a sand box last summer to put on the patio as well. Needless to say, it needed some TLC. Here are some BEFORE pictures…
Some things we did to the yard so far…
-Cut down the tree in the middle of the 3 big trees (why the previous owners or builders planted a tree there is beyond us)
-Ripped up the rose bushes (they’re not shown in the pics, but they were right outside that window…the thorns were lethal and they took up a lot of room)
-Moved the sandbox from the patio to underneath the trees where no grass grows
-Added a patio cover (this was by far the BEST thing we have done to our house…wish we had done it sooner)
-Added a small swing set
-Bought new patio furniture
-Bought a fan to circulate air (this makes a huge difference too)
-We also bought a bounce house we plan to use often as well
Things we still need to do:
-Mow 🙂
-Paint the side of the house (Ryan is doing this today)
-Move the grill next to that side on top of some big stones we need to lay down
-Put small toys in “coffee table” (the “table” opens up and stores things)
-Add big bulb lights to the patio cover
-Repair part of our fence and hopefully extend it down the side of our house to add more yard
-Maybe add some more grass to the yard in the patchy areas.
-I might want to plant some small bushes/flowers where the rose bushes were to kind of “fill” that area so the foundation is hidden and it doesn’t look so harsh
Here are some AFTER pictures SO FAR…
I really love this whole area so much better. I think the patio cover actually made the space bigger. It seemed like such a small area before, but closing it in, actually shows how much space it really covers. I’ve sat out there during rain as well. From 4:30-6:30pm, the patio gets some sun, but you’re still able to sit out there and not melt.
Here are some side by sides for fun!
And my cuties enjoying the backyard!

It looks SO nice! I love it! It gives me the bug to get in and work on our backyard. We have focused the last few years on the front and neglected the back. Great job, it looks wonderful!

Thank you! I know…I have like 10 million projects, but we have to focus on one thing at a time. This year our big focus was the backyard. So worth it with kids too!

the patio makes the difference, it makes the yard a place to spend time and watch the kids instead of having to be uncomfortable about it.
