Last week I did an experiment with my groceries and recipes. I got the idea from one of my favorite blogs I started following, Blissful and Domestic. She is very similar to me regarding finances, but her blog is crazy cool and organized. (Side note: She’s asked me to be a guest on her blog at the end of September, so look out for that).
Anyway, I tried the experiment again of typing it all out and organizing it. I discovered one more thing I love about this idea – I keep the printed document of my recipes and grocery list (it’s all on one document) and hole punch it to keep in a binder. This way I can thumb through these ideas and have a recipe (and ingredient list) without thinking twice. I LOVE THIS! After several weeks, I’ll have tons of recipes and hopefully grocery shopping will become even that much easier.
This is my second week of trying this. I spent $60.55 at Walmart. I forgot sour cream (I will reward myself the week I don’t forget something at the store), so my hubby had to run to Kroger and get some. During his trip, he picked up four sirloin steaks that were on sale and his chocolate milk. So, he spent $12.69 at Kroger. So our total bill this week was $73.24. Not good in my opinion, but it’s a work in progress.
Our menu in a nutshell:
Breakfast – Oatmeal, Banana Bread, Toast and Eggs, Hot Tea
Lunch – Dinner Leftovers, Turkey or PBJ Sandwich, Taco Soup (for R to take to work)
Dinner:
Monday – Garlic Chicken and Healthy Mac/Cheese (by Bobby Deen)
Tuesday – Turkey Sandwiches, Potato Salad, Fruit
Wednesday – Chicken Fried Chicken, Mashed Potatoes, Green Beans, Rolls
Thursday – Tomato Pesto Chicken Roll-Ups, Green Veggie, Rice/Quinoa if we want
Friday – Papa John’s Pizza (Ryan gets home late and mama needs a break)
Saturday – Night Out
Sunday – Steaks, Mashed Potatoes, Veggie, Rolls
Monday – Labor Day, so I’m sure we’ll be grilling out with the fam???
Dessert: Chocolate Chip Cookies – these are to die for!!!! I froze half the dough, so I can just pop them in the oven whenever we want some.
Click here to download the grocery list and meals! You can print the file. Remember the bolded items, I already have in stock and the link to most of the recipes is below the title.
Thought I would share my DIY kitchen office wall with our menu board. |
I didn’t think I would use this, but apparently I have mommy brain and forget what we’re having each night, so this comes in handy! |

For meat, you need to check out http://www.zayconfoods.com/ if you have a freezer! I bought a ton of chicken last year and made a ton of freezer meals and then froze what was left. So much cheaper than the store and then one less thing to have to worry about looking for deals (or remembering to buy)!

I'll check that out! We don't have an extra freezer that's why we usually shop once a week, but I'm curious about the website. Thanks!
